12 Breathtaking Photos of Bulgaria in Winter



Bulgaarian’s breathtaking vistas and spectacular cityscapes look wonderful in all seasons, of course, but there’s something about winter that adds an extra touch of magic. Snowcapped mountains, glittering cities, crisp mornings and starry nights all create beautiful scenery. Take a look at these fabulous photographs and we think you’ll agree that winter in Bulgari is truly spectacular.

1. Pirin National Park

Pirin may only be Bulgaria’s second-highest mountain range, but it easily competes with the national champion Rila in terms of scenic Alpine summits, crystal-clear glacial lakes and unbelievable high-altitude hiking trails.

2. Shipka Pass – Balkan Mountains, Bulgaria

Shipka Pass (el. 1150 m./3820 ft.) is a scenic mountain pass through the Balkan Mountains in Bulgaria.

3. Pirin Mountains

This photo is taken in mountain Pirin and the hur is called Yavorov.

4. Rila Monastery

Rila Monastery was founded in the 10th century by St John of Rila, a hermit canonized by the Orthodox Church.

5. Ivan Vazov Hut in Rila Mountain

This high mountain hut is in the heart of Rila Mountain, Bulgaria. We walked for 12 hours in typical winter weather conditions such as snowfall, fog, wind, and finally darkness. At least the route was avalanche safe.

6. Buzludzha mountain


This concrete behemoth on Buzludzha mountain is a relic of the communist era, wryly called ‘Bulgaria’s UFO’, and it’s beaming up increasing numbers of curious visitors.

7. Village Gela

Gela village is located at the foot of the most magnificent mountain peaks in the Rhodopi mountain – Goliam Perelik, Orpheus peak and peak Turlata.

8.  Kosovo village

The entire town was built on a gorgeous hill, and it seemed every home held a glorious vista.

Bansko ski resort is the best winter resort in Bulgaria with the longest ski runs and the richest cultural history. The town of Bansko is situated at the foot of the Pirin mountain in the south-western Bulgaria, 160 km from Sofia.
